I happened to be subletting for a month or two in a house near London Fields in Hackney. One night maybe six weeks ago a few of us in the house were talking about the dating scene. The only time the two of us could do was that weekend, so I hired a small low-fi kit — camera, set of primes, radio mic and boom, and spent a day or two reminding myself how to shoot.
Then we spent the weekend filming and I went straight into the edit for two and a half weeks. But she quickly learned that exposure to a much larger pool of people hiding behind their sometimes false profiles had significant downsides. Many users have reported experiencing harassment and bad behavior on dating apps , and they may end up feeling more disconnected and lonely than they were when trying to find love the traditional way.
The “game” comes with a growing array of negative experiences reported by users. Sexual harassment, ghosting, catfishing that is, luring people with a fake online persona , and meaningless one-night stands seem to be rampant on these platforms. And so we end up doing behaviors that we wouldn’t ordinarily do, which can be anything from making a nasty comment to sending a lewd photograph to making a connection with someone and then disappearing,” she said.
These issues don’t seem to deter people from trying. Yet even with these tools at our fingertips, loneliness has reached “epidemic levels,” according to a recent survey by the health services company Cigna. If treating online dating like a video game causes problems, some experts say finding a solution will require cultural, not just technological, changes. I don’t believe that the apps inherently make people less mindful.

I had been working on a few different feature length ideas that explore similar themes. Hyper-connectivity and the effect this is having on the way in which we communicate in real life is a subject I am drawn to. In this episode of Colaborator’s “Short on Shorts” we review Offline Dating, a short documentary by Samuel Abrahams, featuring Tom Greaves, that explores.
Then when it came to his initial approach, we felt that stating his intentions right up front could be fun. More out of intrigue really. What would a girl offline if without any chat more whatsoever a guy dating her out? Some people were open to it and others clearly not. I was very aware of making room dating Tom to pick up tips from women.
